The city has derived its name from "Anantha", the thousand-headed serpent of Hindu mythology, which means the "City of the Sacred Snake". Thiruvananthapuram is built over the seven hills. It was once the part of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom whose capital was at Padmanabhapuram, which is now a part of Tamil Nadu.

Tourism in Kerala,India: Shri Padhmanabhaswamy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram Tours Shri Padhmanabhaswamy Temple is one of the most sacred shrines of Kerala. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is within a large complex with a stately gopuram. The temple is provided with a tank within the temple complex for ritual bathing.

Shri Chitra Art Gallery is a famous art gallery with a display of some of the very famous paintings. The Zoological Park of Thiruvananthapuram is one of the first zoos of India. It is within a well-planned botanical garden. The Zoogical Park houses some of the rare species of wildlife. Huge trees like Frangipani and Jacaranda fringe the entire lawn lawns. The animals and birds running and playing all around give an effect of a small jungle within the city.

Napier Museum is a brilliant building designed in the Indo-Saracenic style. The date of its construction dates back to the 19th century. The building is noteworthy for natural air conditioning system. The museum exhibits a rare collection of ancient ornaments, archaeological antiquities, bronze idols, historical artifacts, a temple chariot and ivory carvings.

Shanghumukham Beach is just next to the Thiruvananthapuram Airport. The beach is an ideal location to watch the sun go down. During the day, fishermen can be seen in the middle of the sea busy with their long fishing nets from the sea. The 35-m long sculpture of a mermaid and a restaurant shaped like a starfish are main attraction of this area.

Veli Lagoon is a little tourist village at a short distance from the airport. The Boat Club here offers amenities like pedal boating, row boating and swimming in the Veli Lake.
