Thrissur has a very rich cultural and political history and rightly so regarded as the cultural capital of Kerala. Raja Rama Varma, popularly known as Sakthan Thampuran was the main architect of the present Thrissur town. The beautiful architectures and monuments in and around the city show its historical significance since many centuries in the past. The colorful culture of Thrissur never fails to enchant its visitors.

There are numerous temple architectures and museums that attract thousands of tourists to this cultural capital of Kerala. The most prominent among them is the Vadukkumnathan temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the oldest temples in the state, this is a finest example of the South Indian Temple architecture depicting many decorative murals and works of art.

At Arattupuzha, a village located near the temple, a grand festival is organized every year in the months of April and May. Famous as Pooram festival it draws thousands of pilgrims from all over the south India. The uniqueness of this festival is the ceremonial processions carrying the images of the deities of 29 neighboring temples to this village.

Today, Thrissur is world famous for this Festival, which is one of the biggest festivals of Kerala. Thrissur also houses many cultural centers such as Kerala Kala Mandalam, the Kerala Sahitya Academy and Kerala Nataka Academy.

Besides temples other attractions here are The Art Museum, which displays collections of woodcarvings, metal sculptures and ancient jewellery. The Archaeological Museum is another spot worth visiting in Thrissur.
